In our regular feature, we join a local for a tea break, and find out how they spend their time - and their time off. This week we welcome George Owens who works as a Marketing Assistant with the North Harris Trust.

George, what does a normal day at work look like?
A typical day at work for me would be split between the recycling half of the Urgha Depot and the depot shop. I answer any queries on waste disposal, help organise and dispose of general waste into the skip and save what I can to be repurposed or passed onto someone who might find it useful. At the Urgha Depot shop, we sell a wide range of crofting supplies which include animal feed, fencing supplies, tools, etc. We also sell birdseed, feeders, and gardening tools, so a big part of my job is to keep this stocked and take feedback from customers on what might be useful for us to sell in the future. I am also responsible for the Depot's social media posts.
How did you get where you are today?
I started off working for the North Harris Trust through the Kickstarter scheme in 2021 and then went on to a full-time contract after I found I enjoyed this field of work.
What are your goals for the near future?
Professionally I would like to see less going into landfill. Personally, I would like to pass my driving test, so I don’t have to walk to work in the winter wind and rain.
How do you like to spend your time off?
I like to visit the local beaches with my dog Eric. Also, when the weather is bad, I enjoy playing video games, watching movies, and listening to music.
What are your favourite places on Harris?
On a sunny day, the bench in the front garden, watching the seals and seabirds.
It’s tea break time. What’s on the menu?
A cup of tea, 2 sugars, and a timeout.
