In the second week of June, the Western Isles Community Care Forum (WICCF) launched the HS Carer Card for unpaid carers. The card entitles its holder to discounts or benefits from local businesses that are participating in the programme.

Any unpaid carer over 16 who is registered with WICCF can apply for the Card, although it doesn’t extend to those whose loved ones are in residential care. The application is available in hard copy at the WICCF office or accessible via their website:

The name “HS Carer Card” comes from the postcode everybody in the Western Isles shares. Every card has a photo ID and a different expiration date to avoid delays during renewals. Bereaved carers can keep using their card up to one year following the bereavement.

“Carers have always been an underappreciated group of people, but they are the backbone of society and we all owe them a debt of gratitude,” said Peggy Mackay, Co-ordinator at WICCF. “But the situation is improving and now the Government and Local Authorities are recognising the huge contribution made by them.”

The initial funding for the project was provided by the Carers Act Fund. “The idea started about 18 months ago, having heard of it from colleagues on the mainland,” explains Peggy. Lorna Dodd, who was appointed in October 2024 to bring the idea into reality, approached many Western Isles businesses to offer them participation. To date, 33 businesses have signed up, and it is hoped more will join soon.

“We are very grateful to the businesses who have already signed up for their generosity,” shared Peggy. “We are very conscious of the difficult economic situation facing businesses and we appreciate their commitment to helping carers.” Businesses interested in joining the programme can sign up on the WICCF website. After signing up, they receive a window sticker to show their participation.
