Ullapool outing shows young Harris shinty players growing skills

From Harris Youth Shinty Club: Harris Youth Shinty made their annual trip to Ullapool on Saturday 6th June for a meet with friends from Lewis and Ullapool.

A mix of experienced and new players took part in drills and mini matches, led by Katie Drain of the Camanachd Association. Over 32 players were in-volved, and a great time was had by all. Harris joined forces with a handful of Lewis players to make up a team for the afternoon matches, with the joint team winning both their mini matches. We were very impressed with the sportsmanship of the Lewis players who volunteered their sticks and skills in support of a younger team. It was great to see the progres-sion throughout the day, and even our newest players joining in with style.

Special mention to Finlay Calum Riach, who was chosen as player of the tournament for Harris.

Thanks to Annette Murray and Marina Macleod for organising the event, and to Lisa Macdonald for coming along with Emma to take the children to Ullapool and back.

Harris Youth Shinty is looking to expand. We are keen to recruit secondary age players, and will run two groups if numbers are viable.

We are looking for more helpers and coaches. Full training provided.

We train on Thursdays after school, but even a monthly commitment would be welcome. No prior experience is required for the coaching course, and volunteers will always be supported by a more experienced coach.

- If you’d like to try a new sport and help our young people have a great time playing shinty, please contact the club through your local school.
