In our regular feature, we join a local for a tea break and find out how they spend their time and their time off. This week, we welcome Kristen Murray, Finance and Office Administrator with Harris Voluntary Service (HVS).

Kristen, could you please tell us about yourself and your work?

I’ve recently joined the team at HVS. My career path has always been grounded in community and hospitality, and I feel lucky to be continuing that here in a role that’s all about supporting and connecting people.

I spent over ten years working at Hotel Hebrides, a place that shaped a huge part of my working life and taught me so much about organisation, people, and what it means to go the extra mile. In between, I took a year away and worked for GSH, managing a facilities company. Unfortunately, our local office shut down, but the experience helped shape my future in office administration.

I then joined Essence of Harris, where I worked as Office Manager for almost four years. That was a really special chapter, being part of a growing island-based business with such a strong sense of identity and creativity. It gave me a great foundation in team management and business operations — skills I now bring to my role at Harris Voluntary Service, where I’m excited to be part of something that has a real impact on the island.

How did you get where you are today?

I’d say I got here through a mix of hard work, resilience, and staying open to new opportunities. Each job I’ve had — whether in hospitality, office management, or facilities — has added something different to my toolkit. I’ve always had a people-first mindset, and that’s guided a lot of my decisions over the years. Having been born and brought up in Harris, community matters deeply to me, so every role that lets me give something back in return feels like a step in the right direction.

What are your goals for the near future?

Right now, I’m focused on settling into my new role and getting to know all the people and projects at HVS. It’s such a varied and rewarding environment. Longer term, I’d love to continue growing in this kind of space — supporting others, helping to build community resilience, and using my organisational background to make sure the wheels keep turning smoothly. Personally, I’m hoping to get back into running a bit more and maybe even sign up for another event like the Harris Half.

How do you like to spend your time off?

My two daughters, Sophia Kate (8) and Sìne Peigi (7), keep me on my toes! Most of my free time revolves around them — and I wouldn’t have it any other way. We love getting outdoors, beach walks, and just enjoying the simplicity of island life. I’m also really into fitness and love running and working out when I can fit it in. I ran the Harris Half Marathon last year, which was a huge personal goal for me, though I’ve taken it a bit easier this year.

Cooking is another big passion of mine — I find it really relaxing and creative. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen trying out new recipes or making family favourites. I also make time to visit my family whenever I can. Being close to them is something I’ll never take for granted.

What are your favourite places in Harris?

It has to be the Luskentyre Beach — there’s just something magical about that stretch of sand and sky, no matter the weather. I also have a real soft spot for Strond, where my Granaidh and Seanair live. That place holds so many childhood memories and always feels like a little retreat from the world. There’s nothing quite like the peace and beauty of the South end.

It’s tea break time. What’s on the menu?

A strong cup of tea is non-negotiable! Occasionally, I’ll indulge in a slice of cake, but truth be told, I’m much more of a savoury person. I’m usually holding out for lunch — something hearty and homemade if I’ve had time the night before. I love putting together meals that are wholesome and comforting.
