In our regular feature, we join a local for a tea break, and find out how they spend their time - and their time off. This week we welcome Gemma Campbell who works as a Customer Services & Events Manager at the Distillery.
Gemma, please tell us about yourself and your job.
I moved to Harris from Northern Ireland and have been living here for the past decade. The island quickly felt like home after working a few seasons at the local hotel and making some great friends. For the past two years, I have worked at the Isle of Harris Distillery as the Customer Services and Events Manager. My role is diverse, ranging from answering customer inquiries to organizing and overseeing various events, from intimate tastings to sponsoring larger events like the HebCelt festival. My job is to create unique and memorable experiences that reflect the distillery's values and its connection to the community. It's incredibly rewarding to see people enjoy and appreciate what we've put together, especially when our efforts benefit local charities or support the arts. Recently, I joined the board of directors at the Harris Voluntary Service. It has been fascinating to learn about the team's initiatives in the community, and I am excited to contribute more to my island home through HVS.
What does a normal day at work look like?
Most days I will be found in the office with “the girlies”! My day usually begins with responding to customer emails or phone calls that have come through from the previous day and ensuring that every one of our customers is cared for.
Another important part of my role involves auditing quality management in the production areas of the distillery. It’s been fascinating to learn about these departments and to be part of the team that maintains the high quality of our spirits.
I also have the pleasure of working on various community events throughout the year, which is definitely the most exciting part of my role. This year, we've organized a fundraising event for WIWA to celebrate International Women's Day, served cocktails to thousands at the HebCelt Festival, and created fun cocktails to sponsor local charity events across Lewis and Harris.
How did you get where you are today?
I found myself in Harris after visiting my dad when he was working here on the construction of the new Sir E Scott School. I loved Harris from when I first arrived but before I moved here, I finished my degree in Business and Retail studies. I worked at Harris Tweed Isle of Harris for seven great years and learnt a lot about the heritage of the islands. I moved onto the distillery in 2022 to find a new challenge and have taken each opportunity that has come my way, I am excited to see what my future holds here.
What are your goals for the near future?
I hope to continue working with the local community both personally and in my career. My next project will be my annual pub quiz for Autism Eileanan Siar in the autumn time!
How do you like to spend your time off?
I love visiting my family in Ireland whenever I have time off or travelling to new places. I make it a point to explore a new destination each year. On a more practical note, as a new homeowner, I’m currently spending a lot of time on gardening and DIY projects or socialising with friends.
What are your favourite places in Harris?
On a Friday after work, it wouldn’t be strange to find me at Tigh mo Sheanar with a few friends but when living on such a beautiful island that may not be the best answer… I also enjoy Sunday walks on Luskentyre and seeing how much it changes through the seasons.
It's tea break time, what’s on the menu?
A strong cup of coffee and a Tunnocks Tea Cake for me!
