Plans are underway to bring an artistic new look to the inside of the waiting room at Leverburgh Ferry terminal as part of a project that will see parallel improvements to the Berneray waiting room, on the other side of the Sound of Harris crossing, and other small waiting rooms around the islands.
The Outer Hebrides Heritage Forum (Comann Dual-chas Innse Gall) have received funding from Museums Galleries Scotland to re-decorate the buildings with a heritage theme in mind, making them more attractive and informative for both locals and visitors. Public meetings were held around the islands last month to gather ideas and suggestions for the facelifts.

“We have been granted funding to do some internal cosmetic work to all the wee ferry waiting rooms in the Western Isles, from south to north. This means that, working in collaboration with South Harris Historical Society and Hebrides People, we’ll be giving them all a heritage-themed internal facelift.” said a spokesperson for the Forum.
“There will also be some overlap and exchange between the islands. Leverburgh waiting room will feature some Berneray content and Berneray some Leverburgh content - are there any ties between the islands that would be great to highlight?”
The project is asking local people to contribute their ideas and skills, and to get in touch if they have a particular story, tradition or connection that they would like to see featured.
Local artists who would like to contribute their skills to the designs, and volunteers who have time to help out, are also encouraged to get in touch.
