Bryony Coram - Development Officer, Harris Development Limited
Harris Development Limited was awarded £62,040 to transform the former Scalpay School into affordable housing and community spaces.
Following a successful community consultation in February 2024, Harris Development Limited (HDL) applied for funding to purchase the former Scalpay School. On 21 August, the Scottish Land Fund awarded HDL, a pan-Harris not-for-profit organization, £62,040 to acquire the school and fund a Development Officer post for an 18-month period.
The project, driven by community input, aims to address Scalpay’s urgent need for affordable housing. Plans include converting the former school building into a mix of residential units: three 1-bedroom, one 2-bedroom, and one 3-bedroom apartment. Additionally, three community buildings will be repurposed into a community workshop, extra residential accommodation, and a community business incubation space with a commercial kitchen.
These varied accommodation options will provide resilient housing solutions for different households, making the development appealing to a diverse group of people. The combination of uses for the community buildings will meet a wide range of community needs, from relaxation and accommodation to support for new and small businesses.
As the project progresses, further community consultations are planned to ensure ongoing community involvement and support.
The Development Officer post will be advertised in the next issue of the Dè tha dol?.
