Harris Highland Dancing

It was a lovely summer of highland dancing for 13 dancers from across Lewis and Harris as the Claire Wilson School of Dance headed to Derry/Londonderry, Ireland, to take part in the Ulster Championships and the Maiden City Festival.

There were 7 dancers from Harris who teamed up with Sollus Highland Dancers, some of whom met their pen pals for the first time. The group did excellently in the competition, which had 175 competitors, with some 1st, 2nd, and 3rds coming home, as well as section stamps and some personal bests. Well done, girls!

As well as competing, the girls joined the local dance school to dance on the city walls as part of the festival and also took part in a reel and strathspey workshop. It really was an action-packed trip, which included some time to explore the city and a bit of shopping. The locals even treated the group to a Cèilidh to make them feel at home. This was a highlight for the girls!

A huge thank you to the community and dancers, family, and friends for your help to make this happen. From buying raffle tickets, tea towels, and attending our bingo night. We are so grateful for each and every one of you.

No rest for the Harris dancers as they take part in their annual exams this month. Best of luck to them all.
