Almost two hundred artworks filled the Leverhulme Community Hub on Thursday 5 September and the Tarbert Community Centre on Friday 6 September. The short exhibitions were part of the Design Your Sign project, organised by Tania and Jocelyn from Tarbert in Bloom. Selected artworks will feature on the new signs around the village.
"Tania and I were blown away by the 198 entries and the quality of the work. Our galleries at the Leverburgh Hub and Tarbert Community Centre were well attended and we were delighted to see the school children coming to see their work, work,” said Jocelyn. The colourful designs depicted familiar elements of Harris life: local buildings, hills, machairs, beaches, sheep, deer, cows, and fish. And let us not forget the pretty ferries. The pictures, selected by judges, will be included on four signs funded by Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL). There will be two "Welcome to Tarbert” signs, one picnic area sign next to the post office, and the fourth sign will replace the old one overlooking the ferry traffic waiting area.
It was not easy to pick just a few designs. Some pieces were appreciated for their skill, some for their cheerfulness, and some for their whimsical motives. The judges were also asked to find an artwork that is, according to them, the best representation of Harris. You can see a selection of the drawings in our last printed issue.
"We would like to thank everyone who helped us set up, everyone who entered, those who supported us and those who helped us judge. We now have the task of counting the votes and making some amazing signs for the village. We are very excited by this project," added Jocelyn.
If you missed the two exhibitions and are not content to wait for the village signs, you can see many more project entries on the Tarbert in Bloom FB page.
