It was the much-anticipated South Harris Agricultural Show yesterday, Tuesday 30 July. The event, always a highlight in the summer calendar, was back, full of dog shows, delicious baking, and exciting stalls filled with (you guessed it) more baking, artworks, and more.
“Women Together/Boireannaich Còmhla”, not content with spoiling us at the Sheepdog Trials, provided a mouth-watering range of bakes to fundraise for Women's Aid. If the Clan Cycle Stunt demo impressed us with its dizzying swirls, for us it was the kids' sporting competitions that stole the show (pun intended), and, most particularly, the potato spoon race. At the time of writing, we do not yet have the results of the various shows and competitions, but you can look forward to them in the next issue of the Dè tha dol?.
The South Harris Agricultural Show holds a particular place in the hearts of the Harris Voluntary Service team. It was there, 62 years ago, that the idea to set up a Council of Voluntary Services in Harris first originated. James Shaw Grant (of the Stornoway Gazette and the Crofters' Commission) suggested that Harris should find ways to promote development and collaboration amongst voluntary groups around the island. HVS' first meeting took place two years later, in January 1964. This year, we are celebrating our 60th anniversary. We are organising a party in the Tarbert Community Centre to celebrate on Friday 4 October, so make sure to save the date in your diaries. The Show and HVS are still intricately connected today, as the event takes place on the Leverburgh playing field, renovated thanks to the efforts of HVS and the Leverburgh Enhancement Group in 2006.
